Why you should keep your CV up to date – even if you own the company!

The answer to this isn’t necessarily as obvious as you think!

OK, well I guess there’s one really obvious answer:

So that you’re always ready to go to the job market, especially when the unexpected happens like your role is made redundant.

BUT, there are other reasons that you will benefit by updating your CV regularly (I always suggest to my clients that they do a mini career review every 2-3 months, and this is part of it.)

Here are some of the ways an up-to-date CV will help you in your career (even if your career is as owner of the business!).

  1. An up-to-date CV means that when you get to your performance appraisal you’ve got a log of the evidence that shows the benefits you’ve brought to the company, which gives you the opportunity to get the best outcome from that event.
  2. When you’re talking with customers, you’ll know which stories to tell them to demonstrate how you’ve helped people like them, increasing your credibility and the chance of them buying (you might also think about a team or company CV).
  3. It’ll help increase your confidence by helping you realise the impact you have and difference you make. You’ll get past the “I’m just a …[whatever your job title is]” that most people respond with then asked what they do.

You may not be aware that there are several types of CV depending what your objective or target is.

I’ve created a template showing you how to layout the three main styles of CV.

For the regular management of your career, I recommend a Functional style. You can then create a Reverse Chronological or Combination CV if you need to when you go to the job market.

Wishing you success in your career and beyond.
